iPad Winner - Joel BensonMONROE, LOUISIANA Joel Benson, a youth account holder at Pelican State Credit Union, took home a brand new iPad! Each year, all children who complete the credit unions financial literacy video game, MoneyIsland, are entered to win. This free, online video game is designed to teach ordinary kids ages 8-14 about money and turn them into financial gurus. To earn virtual money, players answer questions based on the lessons they learn and then pay bills, invest, donate and spend their money responsibly. In addition to MoneyIsland, kids with a Pelican Youth Account earn quarterly dividends and receive $1 for every highest attainable grade on their semester-end report card up to $10! "Pelican is always looking for ways to get children excited about saving and managing money," said Pelican CEO Jeffrey K. Conrad. "MoneyIsland is also a great tool for educators to use to teach financial management at the classroom level," Conrad added. MoneyIsland offers an administrator tool that allows teachers to track their classrooms progress. Detailed lesson plans and sample activities are provided online to further engage students. Plus, once the students conquer the game, the class receives a pizza party with Pelicans mascot Petey, a feature in Pelicans member newsletter, a shout out from Pelican on social media and a press release sent out to local media! MoneyIsland doesnt skip on fun...or smarts! The lessons learned are aligned with Common Core State Standards and the national standards published by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.
