Credit Union Supports Therapeutic Equine Program
November 19, 2013
As a member of the Minot, ND community, GEM Federal Credit Union answered the call when Minot State University asked for local organizations to complete a community service project. Minot State University is celebrating their 100th Anniversary and is challenging businesses and organizations, friends and alumni to participate in a service project, with a goal of completing 100 community service projects.
RyLeigh Engg, MSR at GEM, is involved in an Equine Therapeutic program called STEP (Serenity Therapeutic Equine Program). STEP is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit whose mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve success through equine assisted therapies. The organization was established to provide a calm, safe and healthy environment for children, adults and families to engage in a collaborative process with horses as part of a healing process. On the STEP website there is a list of needs for the program. One of the co-founders, Kristi Schafer, does a lot of the work for the program on her own time and money. GEM FCU felt that $100 worth of goods would help with their "needs" list. RyLeigh and Nicole Kaylor, also a MSR at GEM, chose several items on the list to purchase, and donated $100 worth of goods, keeping with MSUs 100 theme.
GEM staff presented Kristi and STEP with their donation, and had the opportunity to meet two of the horses that Kristi uses in the program. Photo: RyLeigh Engg with Sibley and Kristi Schafer with JoJo, two of the STEP therapeutic equines.
