Credit Union Brings Financial Reality Fair to High School Students
October 22, 2013
Warminster, PA- On Thursday, October 17th, more than 200 students from Murrell Dobbins CTE High School in Philadelphia learned real-life lessons in budgeting and the cost of living as Freedom Credit Union, in association with PCUA, presented Philadelphias first "Reality Fair."
State Representative J.P. Miranda (D-Philadelphia) visited the event, observing the activity and talking with students and volunteers. The Reality Fair included 44 volunteers from 10 credit unions along with several members of the Murrell Dobbins Teacher Alumni Association.
At the fair, students were given a financial workbook containing a list of "real-world" expenses including housing, furniture, clothing, and entertainment all expenses that they will likely encounter as income-earning adults. The students visited information booths manned by volunteers from Freedom and other credit unions and businesses, who helped the students receive the best, most practical budget for each category. Students also had a chance to spin the Reality Wheel, which assigns an unplanned expense in order to mimic the random costs that often impact personal budgets. Finally, after completing their financial workbooks, students received individual advice from financial counselors about how to improve their budgets and save money or spend more prudently.
Freedom Credit Union is committed to providing financial education for all ages, and is proud to contribute to the success of the Philadelphia-area Reality Fairs.
