On Thursday, October 17
th, students from Murrell Dobbins CTE High School in Philadelphia will learn real-life lessons in budgeting and the cost of living as Freedom Credit Union, in association with PCUA, present Philadelphias first "Reality Fair."
At the fair, students are given a financial workbook containing a list of "real-world" expenses including housing, furniture, clothing, and entertainment that they will likely encounter as income-earning adults. The students will visit information booths manned by volunteers from Freedom and other credit unions and businesses, who will help the students receive the best, most practical budget for each category. Students will also get a chance to spin the Reality Wheel, which assigns an unplanned expense in order to mimic the random costs that often impact personal budgets. Finally, after completing their financial workbooks, students will receive individual advice from financial counselors about how to improve their budgets and save money or spend more prudently.
