Credit Union Offers Life Line During Government Shutdown
October 4, 2013
Minuteman Community Federal Credit Union of Rapid City, SD is not about to let the government shut down to cause financial stress for their members or active duty military personnel. A recent flyer distributed by the credit union stated that "Penalties for premature withdrawals made by federal employees on certificates will be waived during the government shutdown period." In addition, the credit union is allowing affected members the option to skip one months payment on loans without incurring any fees. Finally, the credit union is offering a "Government Life Line" a line of credit with 0% APR for affected members.
According to Mary Connick, President-CEO of Minuteman Community FCU, the credit union was prepared for this crisis after having the program details ready when the last government shut-down was looming. During the budget sequestration, the credit union had also offered a program to service members who had to go several days without pay.
Connick says the credit union has already been receiving positive feedback about their assistance not only from members, but from other National Guard employees as well. One National Guard member came in personally to thank the credit union for helping them out, expressing appreciation and relief. Another member could not thank them enough for being there for him and his family. "We were ready to support our service members who are affected by the Government shut down," says Connick. "We have been serving the National Guard for over 50 years, and this is just another way to provide a service to our members who serve our country. This is a typical reaction of our credit union when adverse financial situations occur that may affect our military members," she added.
The credit union has shared their flyer with the NAFCU, and even received a call from a California credit union asking for information about their program.
