MORRISVILLE, Vt.VSECU continues its commitment to improving the quality of life for all Vermonters by helping the Salvation Farms purchase a much-needed pickup truck to support its work to manage Vermonts farm surplus crops. The Toyota Tacoma has already begun to transport and deliver food to organizations around the state.
"We are so pleased to have helped provide resources for Salvation Farms new pickup truck. Being able to help get food healthy food that would have otherwise gone to waste to those in need is one of the many ways VSECU works to help our neighbors," said Kate Paine, Board member and Chair of the VSECU Community Giving Program.
The ability to purchase the pickup truck was a result of people pooling available resources together. The truck was purchased at a very reasonable price made available from Handy Toyota, St. Albans, a small amount financed by VSECU, a $7,500 gift from the credit union, and the difference being met by the generosity of Salvation Farms individual and corporate donors.
"The generous contribution to our work by VSECU and the resulting vehicle are the kinds of investments critical to laying the foundation of our new programs and vision to build a food secure future for Vermont through the responsible management of food resources and partnerships here at home," says Theresa Snow, Salvation Farms founding director.
Through harvesting, processing and preservation of Vermonts home-grown food, Salvation Farms keeps Vermonts harvests in our state and on our neighbors dinner tables. Utilizing local resources, skills and knowledge, they create strong partnerships across industries to effectively move surplus food from farms to those who need it. "Its amazing how the pooling of peoples efforts and resources can benefit communities," said Snow. She referred to the recent work of inmates from the Caledonia County Work Camp gleaning winter squash that will eventually feed vulnerable citizens through the Vermont Foodbank distribution to local community food shelves and transported by the credit unions donation.
