Susie Blaalid and her fellow members in the Community First CU mortgage department are among those who count their blessings daily and often look for ways to help the needy in our communities. The same goes for the staff at the Greenville branch and other Community First departments who have stepped up to assist the Fox Valley Warming Shelter in providing meals for up to 50 clients that might be staying there. "The whole (mortgage) department is involved in one way, shape or form," Susie said after serving 40 residents in late August. "They really appreciate being fed a good meal and its just wonderful to be able to do that for these people who are not as fortunate as some of us."
Connie Raether, the shelters volunteer coordinator, said Community First is one of several companies she leans on to fill gaps in the meal schedule. The shelter provides basic needs showers, laundry, food and a safe nights sleep for homeless single adults plus case management to get them back on their feet. "Without (volunteers) we would really have a hard time carrying out our mission of making sure homeless people have a safe place to sleep and nutritious food to start and end their day," Connie said.
"Serving at the warming shelter is just a small thing that we can do for our community," said Greenville receptionist Gina Zilisch. "We are so fortunate in our own lives, food to eat and a warm bed or air conditioning for comfort that we can get lost in that, thinking EVERYONE has this." Gina has taken her high school-age daughters to serve a meal at the shelter as well.
"The best part of serving the meal is the smiles we see on the warming shelter residents faces," said Julie Baker, collections specialist, whose department served a meal for 52 residents of the homeless shelter. "We want to give back to the community because we are so thankful for what we have."
Community First Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative serving more than 100,000 member/owners in Northeastern Wisconsin.
