diamondPottstown, PA - The Diamond Credit Union Alfred A. Panfile Memorial Scholarship was awarded to four local students who followed Alfred A. Panfiles example by showing a deep commitment to volunteering in the community. In order to apply for the scholarship, students were asked to write an essay about their experiences with volunteerism, illustrating how theyve grown as a result of their work. Diamonds Scholarship Committee chose the winners based on the content of their essays. The first place scholarship recipient is Nicole Terry. She was awarded $2,160.00. Nicole is a graduate of Spring-Ford High School, pursuing elementary education at Penn State Berks. The remaining recipients each received an award of $1,000.00. Jessica Updegrove is a graduate of Oley Valley High School, pursuing Air Traffic Management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Kevin Shainline is a graduate of Pope John Paul II High School, pursuing Psychology at Alvernia University. Emily Yarosz is a graduate of Governor Mifflin Senior High School, pursuing Immunology and Infectious Disease at The Pennsylvania State University. "I had the privilege of working with Alfred Panfile for many years and more than that, I considered him a friend. I was constantly impressed by his commitment to community service. He set an excellent example and Im confident that hed be proud of these exceptional students," stated John Faust, President/CEO of Diamond Credit Union. Panfile was a dedicated Diamond Credit Union Board member as well an active community leader volunteering for an extensive list of local organizations. After Panfiles retirement from the Diamond Board in 2004, the Board voted to honor his community service by naming the Academic Scholarship after him. Sadly, Panfile passed away in 2012. In the wake of his passing, he was honored posthumously with Director Emeritus status, and the "Alfred A. Panfile Academic Scholarship" was renamed the "Alfred A. Panfile Memorial Scholarship." The scholarship award has been increased this year because of the generosity of many individuals who contributed to the scholarship fund in 2012 to pay respect to Panfile and his family.
