Credit Union School Supply Drive Sets Record with Over 90,000 Items
September 9, 2013
Rapid City, SD Black Hills Federal Credit Union started their annual School Supply Drive seventeen years ago to help local families who were struggling with back-to-school expenses. The goal was to ensure that as many students as possible were equipped with the needed supplies so every child could have an equal opportunity to learn and be successful in the classroom. The Drive has grown and expanded into several Black Hills communities over the years but BHFCU organizers never thought it would reach this magnitude, with more than 90,300 supplies for local students!
"The record number of supplies is due to the extreme generosity of many business and individuals of all ages. With the help and support of so many in the Black Hills, more than 5,000 students now have the tools needed to excel in school." said Kylene Casanova, BHFCU Membership Development Coordinator and co-chair of the School Supply Drive. "Going to class without supplies makes it very difficult for a student to be successful, but it also makes a teachers job much harder when everyone in the classroom doesnt have the right equipment. The School Supply Drive helps provide a better learning environment for everyone."
The supplies were distributed to more than 60 schools in Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Box Elder, Black Hawk, Custer, Eagle Butte, Hill City, Hermosa, Hot Springs, Piedmont, Spearfish, Sturgis and Wall.
