(EL PASO, TX – APRIL 14, 2022) –– The Security Service Charitable Foundation has donated $5,000 to the El Paso Opportunity Center for the Homeless. This donation will help to support the Opportunity Center’s (OC) “La Casa de los Abuelitos,” a program housed within the Willie Sanchez Rosales Center in El Paso. The donation will provide restroom facility upgrades within one of the two structures that support this initiative.
“The Opportunity Center for the Homeless exists to serve all individuals facing homelessness, without distinction of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or religion, and regardless of mental concerns, chemical or alcohol dependency,” said John Martin, deputy director for Opportunity Center. “The support we have received from the Security Service Charitable Foundation is a tremendous blessing and will go a long way in supporting our initiative to combat homelessness in our community.”
The charitable foundation’s donation will help to bring the OC’s restroom facilities up to ADA standards by providing handrails and enlarged fixtures. These updates will increase the organization’s capacity to serve the area’s elderly and frail community members in need. On average 1,110 elderly and frail men pass through the OC’s program per year, with a final goal of transitioning these individuals out of homeless permanently.
“Everyone deserves a chance to have a warm and secure place to live,” said Marisela Rios, vice president of member service—Mountain Region for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “We are grateful to organizations like the Opportunity Center because they bring so much support and hope to our elderly population who face homelessness. It is such an honor to support them in their mission to assist those most in need.”
Founded in 1994, the Opportunity Center for the Homeless prides itself on an open-door policy and commitment to the community. The recovery-oriented organization focuses on assisting homeless and needy individuals who may have otherwise been disqualified from or screened out of other care programs. The OC operates four emergency shelters, one transitional living center, and four permanent housing facilities.
The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union's market areas.
