CaptureCommunity Credit Union of Florida is asking for the communitys support in raising raise $45,000 to replace one of the box trucks now in use by Meals on Wheels. The new truck has been a need for several years, but the need has now become urgent as the vehicle that will be replaced has been in use since 1999 and remains in service only due to a second engine replacement. "Its just a matter of time before it just gives up," said Cindy Flachmeier, president and chief executive officer for Aging Matters. Donations will be accepted through Saturday at any of CCUs seven branches in Brevard. Trucks are used to deliver hot meals prepared at the Brevard Community Kitchen to centers where they are picked up by the volunteers that deliver them to eligible seniors who are homebound due to illness or disability, or who are isolated due to lack of access to transportation. Meals are provided at no cost, or in some cases at a low cost, based on ability to pay. David Brock, Community Credit Unions president and chief executive officer, said that the idea for the fundraiser came up during planning for the credit unions 60th anniversary celebration. "At first, we considered putting on a carnival-like family event, which we and our members would certainly have enjoyed, but then we realized that there would be a more lasting impact to the community we have served since 1953 if we were to direct the time and effort towards helping Aging Matters in Brevard replace a truck and help keep Meals on Wheels moving along," Brock said. "We say in our mission statement that we will make a positive impact in the community, and this is certainly an effort that will support that intention." The $45,000 represents the cost of the truck and the equipment needed to properly store the meals while being transported. Donors can also call the credit union at 321-.690-2328 and make a donation over the phone by transferring funds from a CCU account or with a VISA debit or credit card. Online donations are accepted at the Aging Matters in Brevard web site www.agingmattersbrevard.org.
