TFCU Makes First Donation to the El Paso Rhino Hockey Association
October 6, 2021
El Paso, Texas – The first community Spirit Debit Card presented by TFCU has already shown great promise of return within its first six months of use. The Credit Union’s partnership with the El Paso Rhinos kicked off December 2020, with a giveback initiative to help support the mission of the El Paso Hockey Association, a 501(c)(3) organization serving over 1000 local families by offering youth, high school, and adult hockey programs.
TFCU’s promise to the El Paso Hockey Association was to give $0.05 for every qualifying purchase, then match the total donation made for the next three years. Thanks to all El Paso Rhinos Debit Card holders, TFCU was able to donate about $1,000 to the program so far. The money given will help the Rhino Rookies Program, under the El Paso Hockey Association, to pay for high expense equipment such as sticks, helmets, and skates, in efforts to make hockey an accessible sport for the youth of the community. Both organizations look forward to the continued success that this partnership will bring.

About the El Paso Rhinos: From cow barn to ice hockey rink, retired and former El Paso Buzzards professional hockey player Cory Herman founded the El Paso Rhinos in 2006. The Rhinos faced many challenges trying to find support in creating a local culture for a sport that wasn’t traditional to the border community. Today the Rhinos volunteer their time to show their support for the El Paso community by making over 300 appearances annually including visits to schools, non-profit organizations, and other local events. They were named Kraft Hockeyville USA 2020 by Kraft-Heinz, the National Hockey League, and NHL Players Association. The El Paso Figure Skating Club currently has over 100 active members, and the rink sees over 230,000 visitors during the holiday season.
