BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA—Pelican State Credit Union launched its relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ida and the devastation it brought to Southeast Louisiana.

The storm’s impact was felt across numerous communities that the credit union serves, bringing heavy flooding, dangerous winds, and widespread power outages with it.

On Friday, September 17, 2021, the credit union organized a gas giveaway to provide relief to residents of Terrebonne Parish. 15 Pelican team members made the 2-hour drive from Baton Rouge and pumped free gas for over 100 vehicles.

Pelican collaborated with J & N Truck Stop, which is locally owned and operated in Houma, Louisiana, to host the giveaway. The truck stop graciously contributed an additional $1,000, bringing the total to $7,000 of free gas that was given away. The credit union’s vendors—Kasasa, Facilities Maintenance Management, and Marquis—generously contributed to the relief efforts, on top of personal donations made by partners Kelly Flynn from John M. Floyd & Associates and Trey Beall from Gulf Coast Office Products.

The credit union also extended relief to its members who were financially impacted by the storm. A total of $118,151 in Overdraft, Non-Sufficient Funds, and ATM fees were proactively refunded to Pelican members who live in FEMA disaster declared parishes. Additionally, Pelican provided Disaster Relief Loans, Visa credit card limit increases, and loan payment extensions to eligible and affected members. It even partnered with ATM Worldwide and stationed a mobile ATM at La Terre FCU in Houma. From September 5-20, 2021, 402 ATM withdrawals were made, totaling $51,340.

Pelican team members have enjoyed volunteering at local food banks in Lafayette, Monroe, and Baton Rouge to help sort and pack foods for various organizations and distribute them out to disaster areas.

The sustained well-being of its members and communities has always been the credit union’s highest priority. As the state of Louisiana navigates down its road to recovery, Pelican will continue to be there.
