(SAN ANTONIO, TX – AUGUST 27, 2021) –– The Security Service Charitable Foundation is helping Snack Pak 4 Kids San Antonio (SP4KSA) through a donation of $2,500, which will be used to provide 1,200 snack bags for children in the program. This donation will effectively feed 33 children in the San Antonio area for an entire school year.
“Hunger impacts a child’s ability to learn,” said Leslie Kingman, volunteer executive director for Snack Pak 4 Kids San Antonio. “By providing weekend food supplements to serve the needs of chronically hungry children, we are addressing the relationship between food insecurity and learning.”
Founded in 2010, SP4KSA began as a way to provide food supplements to students identified by their teachers as having food insecurity over the weekend. The program continues to serve more children in more schools each year, with the help of community partners.
“The schools do a wonderful job of making sure children are fed during the week, but it’s over the weekend that many children go without a meal,” said Brandy Ralston-Lint, senior vice president of corporate communication for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “These snack bags help provide food and solve weekend hunger issues, allowing children to return to school on Monday and be focused on learning.”
In Bexar County alone more than 120,000 children are considered to be food insecure, of those it is estimated that 10-20% deal with chronic hunger - lacking the adequate nutrition to lead a healthy, productive life. During the early days of the pandemic, when all learning was remote, SP4KSA greatly increased production to assist schools and their students with weekend provision at curbside from 2,200 to 6,000 snack bags every week.
