Veridians Community Shred Days Helps Safely Dispose of 80,300 Pounds of Documents

WATERLOO, Iowa (June 11, 2021) – Iowans shredded 80,300 pounds of sensitive documents to help protect their identities from fraud at Veridian Credit Union’s recent Community Shred Days. After a one-year hiatus of the semiannual events in 2020, mobile shred trucks returned to event sites in Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Waterloo on select dates in May and June. An estimated 3,200 people attended to safely dispose of their unwanted documents.
"We host Community Shred Days to offer a free, convenient way to shred unwanted documents that contain personal information," said Veridian's public relations strategist Ashtin Hotek. "It’s an easy way to help protect you from identity theft. The events are always well-attended, and we're grateful to be able to bring them back this year."
The shredded material is recycled into commercial-grade paper products. Since the first Community Shred Day in 2009, the events are estimated to have saved more than 9,200 trees and 1,600 cubic yards of landfill space. Veridian will host another series of Community Shred Days in the fall. Those dates and other details will be available at veridiancu.org/shred.
