Credit Union Invests in Youth and Volunteerism

The Westerly Community Credit Union, through their Investment in Youth program, recently rewarded local Middle Schools with over $7500 for their community service!
Created and run by the Board of Directors of the Westerly Community Credit Union, the Investment in Youth program gives Middles School students the opportunity to complete volunteer work and earn money for their schools PTO. Students are required to complete an essay about their volunteer work and what they learned from their experience.
The Credit Union donates $3.00 for every hour volunteered with goals based on the schools population. Bonuses are paid for reaching their mark and being the first to do so. The Westerly Middle School was the first Middle School in the program this year to reach their 800 hour mark and therefore earned the maximum of $3000.
Westerly Middle School teachers and students shared their volunteer efforts throughout the Community. Volunteer time was dedicated to support Super Storm Sandy, the Westerly Animal Shelter, Johnny Cake Center, Westerly Public Library, Warm Shelter, Tower Street Community Center, Westerly Senior Center and other local organizations. Many fundraisers were also staffed by student volunteers to raise money for these local organizations such as a Spirit Week Fundraiser, Yard Sale Fundraiser, Math-A-thon, Pancake Breakfast and Surf-Town Marathon. Students also wrote cards and letters for Apple Rehab patients and War Veterans.
Since it started in 1999, the WCCU Investment in Youth Program has logged over 23,000 volunteer hours and donated over $78,000.00 to the following Middle Schools: Chariho, Narragansett, Pawcatuck, St. Pius X School, and Westerly. Curtis Corner Middle School has officially been added to the program and will participate next year.
