Hanscom AFB, MA (May 19, 2021) – Hanscom Federal Credit Union has donated 1,416 books for the annual children’s book drive sponsored by the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA). The books are distributed by the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless to nonprofit agencies in cities and communities across the commonwealth serving children ranging from babies to teens.
The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, creators of the bed-providing initiative A Bed for Every Child, launched its month-long Children’s Book Drive in 2001. They recognize not only the importance of a good night’s sleep in a child’s life, but also the profound ways something as simple as a bedtime story can shape a child’s developing brain and so many foundational skills they need for school.
This is the 20th year Hanscom FCU is contributing to the CCUA drive. Since 2008 they have collected a total of 39,820 books for the cause through donations from employees; volunteers; and this year, through books donated through an online purchasing drive.
“The impact books have on children is undeniable, developing their creativity, empathy, critical thinking, and so much more,” said John Delcore, Hanscom FCU’s chairman of the board. “Our credit union is committed to the growth and wellbeing of younger generations, not only in school, but also in life. We’re happy to be able to make an impact on any child’s life, especially with reading, which will grow with them into adulthood.”
