nerd walletThe personal finance website NerdWallet has announced the winners of its 2013 Gen Y Credit Union Contest. This unique initiative challenged credit unions across the country to come up with new programs to engage their young adult members. Contest participants also wrote financial literacy "commencement speeches" for the graduating class of 2013. The contest judges included Wendell "Bucky" Sebastian, former executive director of the National Credit Union Foundation; Joseph A. Peri, president of Junior Achievement of New York; and the winning student team from UC Berkeleys Big Ideas contest. Christian Financial Credit Union was awarded the grand prize of $2,000 for their innovative social media scavenger hunt, which teaches financial literacy through a series of online and real-life challenges. The judges were impressed by the initiatives use of technology to help young adults internalize and engage with essential financial literacy concepts. Cooperative Federal Credit Union received the runner-up prize of $1,000 for their team-based savings challenge, which will be open to student groups at their Youth Credit Union sites. Two additional prizes of $1,000 were also awarded to PremierOne Credit Union, for their Credit Zone website, and Financial One Credit Union, for their "Whats Your Number?" financial literacy initiative. "On behalf of the NerdWallet team, Id like to thank every credit union that entered our contest and showed their support for youth financial literacy," says Laura Edgar, NerdWallets content and media manager. "Young adults can benefit greatly from the consumer-friendly products and services that credit unions have to offer."
