Since the scholarship was established in 1996, Capital Credit Union has awarded $132,500 to 138 students. It is named in honor of Howard J. Snortland and his 60 years of volunteer service to Capital Credit Union. Snortland was instrumental in helping the credit union grow from its humble roots to the thriving financial cooperative it is today. He was a relentless advocate of Capital Credit Union and the credit union industry and dedicated to educating members, elected officials and local citizens about its cooperative structure, member-centric products, personalized service and community involvement.

Capital Credit Union, originally chartered in North Dakota in 1936, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by each of its more than 30,000 members and overseen by a member-elected board of directors. They offer personal and business banking solutions including auto loans, home equity loans, mortgage loans, checking accounts, savings accounts, business loans and more to member individuals, businesses and other organizations located within a 75-mile radius of Bismarck, Hazen or Fargo, or a 50-mile radius of Beulah or New Salem.
