Penticton, B.C. Two Kelowna students recently moved closer to reaching their educational goals after each received $2,500 from the newly established Valley First Feed the Valley volunteer education award program.
The Feed the Valley volunteer education award is open to students who display outstanding volunteerism with their local food bank in Valley First communities. The inaugural awards were presented to Stephanie Fell and Jennifer Andrews.
Fell, a recent Okanagan College science graduate, is continuing her studies at UBC in Vancouver in September when she begins a bachelor of science in the faculty of food, nutrition and health. Her goal: becoming a registered dietitian.
"As a volunteer with the Kelowna Community Food Bank it is an honour to be recognized for both my educational success and community involvement," says Fell. "I truly appreciate the support the Feed the Valley education award will provide me as I transition from college to university. Thank you Valley First."
Andrews is no stranger to volunteerism and education. As an active community advocate she has volunteered at the Kelowna Community Food Bank for three years as well as being a member of the student-run non-profit organization Enactus Okanagan. Andrews has also volunteered with the Senior Outreach and Visitor Centre, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary.
"Im ecstatic to be awarded the Feed the Valley volunteer education award," says Andrews. "This scholarship will be a terrific help as I continue my business administration studies at Okanagan College. I am so grateful for the support Valley First provides to the community and to us students."
Valley Firsts Christa Phillips says it both heartening and rewarding to be able to recognize Fell and Andrews with the Feed the Valley awards.
"Its terrific that we can recognize the hard work and dedication Stephanie and Jennifer have shown to their community their education," says Phillips. "They are both shining examples of up-and-coming leaders and we wish them all the best as they continue to make a difference in the community."
