At TruWest Credit Union, the "people helping people" principle is more than a guiding philosophy—it's a lived reality. Rachel Caballero, Director of Community Engagement, shares how their community outreach programs are rooted in this belief, focusing on fostering a culture of care, offering financial education, and engaging in volunteerism to empower individuals and support underserved communities. Digging deeper into TruWest’s philosophy, Rachel highlights the key initiatives that make a lasting impact.

“Our community outreach efforts are guided by a range of important goals and objectives. As a credit union, we are committed to the 'people helping people' philosophy and foster a culture of caring within our organization. This commitment includes active participation in philanthropic activities, volunteerism, social responsibility, and the provision of financial education.”
TruWest’s approach to financial literacy is central to its outreach efforts. Rachel explained, “We believe financial literacy is essential for making informed financial decisions. To support this belief, we collaborate with local non-profit organizations, schools, churches, and community groups to offer financial education and simulations aimed at enhancing financial knowledge.”
Members of TruWest have shown strong support for these initiatives, as they align closely with the values held by the credit union's community. When asked about the initiatives that have resonated most with members, Rachel noted, “We are fortunate to have members with values that align with our own and are happy to contribute to various causes. The drives that we run, in addition to our philanthropic fundraising, are made more successful because of the support of our members. In addition, many of our members take part in educational workshops on topics that include, but are not limited to, Wills and Trusts, 401K, saving, and budgeting.”
Rachel emphasized that the success of these initiatives is a testament to the collective efforts of both members and staff.
“One of the benefits of being a member of a credit union is that you’re part-owner in an organization that gives back to not only you with higher deposit rates, lower savings rates, and an abundance of services, but has a deeply-rooted care for the community you live in and the people in that community.”
Looking toward the future, TruWest envisions an evolving role for credit unions in community service. Rachel shared her perspective on how this role might change over the next decade: “Credit unions were founded on the principles of collaboration and community support. The original mission was to enable individuals within a community to pool resources and provide financial opportunities that would otherwise be inaccessible. Since the establishment of the first credit union in 1864, this foundational concept has expanded significantly.”
Rachel continued, “Today, credit unions offer a diverse array of deposit products, loan services, and technology-driven banking solutions, continually enhancing opportunities for their members. Many credit unions have also established their own foundations, dedicated to community service and philanthropic efforts. Emphasizing a focus on people rather than profit, credit unions are consistently innovating to better serve their communities.”
In the next decade, TruWest plans to deepen its commitment to affordable financial services, especially for low-to-moderate-income families, and expand its involvement in promoting equity and equality. As Rachel put it, “Credit unions are positioned to further their commitment to providing affordable financial services to all members within their field of membership. This includes developing programs for low-to-moderate-income families, engaging in social issues to promote equity and equality, expanding financial education, and increasing their presence in schools.”
Rachel’s advice to other credit unions is to focus on collaboration to enhance giving initiatives. “Collaboration and strategic networking are essential for advancing your giving initiatives. Partnering with local organizations, Chambers of Commerce, schools, and businesses can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your efforts. Additionally, leveraging social media is an effective means of raising awareness about your initiatives and mobilizing support through participation, donations, and advocacy.”
TruWest Credit Union stands as a powerful example of the credit union philosophy in action, and at CU Social Good, we are honored to share their story.
