DULUTH, GA (July 29, 2024) - Kids in Habersham County are headed back to school with new Georgia United branded backpacks full of school supplies courtesy of Habersham County Sheriff’s School Resources Officers (SRO) “Shop With an SRO” event held July 29 at Habersham County Fairgrounds. Habersham County Schools students in need selected their backpacks – donated by Georgia United - and filled them with school supplies donated by the local community for classes, which start August 2.
"We are extremely grateful for these donations, the
partnership and helping the children in our school system who may not be
able to afford a backpack,” said Sheriff Joey Terrell. “The backpacks mean a
lot to us. Our SROs put in a lot of hard work - they've done all the hard work
- and we appreciate them so much. We welcome Georgia United’s participation in
helping us take care of our community’s children and youth for the upcoming
school year.”
The SROs spent weeks gathering and collecting the supplies but were still
in need of a key component: backpacks. When Georgia United learned that
backpacks were needed for the event, the organization delivered 650 black
backpacks to its Cornelia branch and donated them to the sheriff’s department
on July 26.
Georgia United merged with North Main Credit Union in 2023 and the
former North Main building at 255 N. Main Street became Georgia United’s
Cornelia branch in October 2023, serving Habersham and Banks counties, along
with employees of Fieldale Farms Corporation and Ethicon, Inc.
Georgia United’s purpose is to enrich lives and the credit union supports
community programs that strengthen school systems, like Habersham County
Sheriff’s “Shop With an SRO” event. Meanwhile, Georgia United Foundation’s School
Crashers school improvement grant is wrapping up a STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) Lab at Cornelia Elementary before school starts this year.
"This partnership with the sheriff's office highlights the
benefits of banking with a credit union - we put people first and support local
programs," said Georgia United SVP of Member Experience Steve Swanson.
"The Cornelia community has welcomed us with open arms, and we love
spending time here. We are always looking for ways to give back and make a
difference."
